Joel Tepp’s 50+ year musical career began with the blues. As a young harmonica and clarinet player, he accompanied classic early musicians such as Johnny Shines, Bukka White, Sippie Wallace, Earl Hooker, and Magic Sam, as well as newcomers like Bonnie Raitt and Maria Muldaur. It was through direct teaching from older blues masters that he added slide guitar to his instruments and became familiar with traditional blues gospel music. In addition to roots music, his career also includes hundreds of recordings, TV and film credits, playing with Little Feat, Jerry Garcia, Leslie West, Crazy Horse, John Hall, and many other artists.
As a direct descendent of literally centuries of spiritual leaders, Joel is also bringing a personal family tradition to his presentation of the 2018 Mt. Baker Gospel Hour: a morning of reflection, inspiration, joy, and comfort. All beliefs and traditions are embraced as we gather to share songs and stories while celebrating our common ground as brothers and sisters who love the music and the community that has grown up around it.
